Physical Education (PE) gives students a great opportunity to learn about mindfulness. If monitored properly, sports can be a great way to teach students how to manage their bodies and minds in a positive way. In a competitive environment, teachers have the ability to teach students how to compete in a healthy way. This involves learning how to cope with losing and learning how to properly handle winning. Both of these scenarios happen in everyday life, so it is important that students learn how to appropriately react to them in a safe and positive environment.
In saying this, PE should not be solely focused on sports and competition. The purpose of the Alberta PE curriculum is to, "enable individuals to develop their knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle (Learn Alberta)." The focus should be to expose students to a variety of ways to live an active life. Not all students are athletically inclined and it is important for them to know that they don't need to be. They need to know that despite their lack of athletic ability, it is still very important to be active.
As PE is a common place for students to become anxious and stressed, the strategies section will provide information, strategies, and external links to help students that struggle with stress and anxiety in the gym.
